On October 27, Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha shattered the men’s half marathon world record on Sunday, completing the Medio Maraton de Valencia in Spain in 57 minutes and 30 seconds, breaking the previous record by one second. That record had been set by Kenya’s Jacob Kiplimo in Lisbon in 2021. The 27-year-old Kejelcha, competing in only his sixth half marathon, positioned himself behind the pacemakers from the beginning before making his move around the three-kilometer mark.

Kejelcha, who holds the world indoor mile record, broke away from Kenyans Daniel Mateiko and Isaia Kipkoech to win the race in record time.
