Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay says he has no regrets about leaving Manchester United this summer.
Since his move to the Italian club, McTominay has made an impact, scoring three goals and providing three assists in 13 Serie A appearances.
Speaking to the BBC, McTominay revealed that both he and United agreed it was the right time for him to move on. He added that Napoli’s vision and ambition convinced him to join.
“Leaving Manchester United, where I grew up, was a big decision but also a clear one,” McTominay said. “I saw the passionate fans, the coach, the players, and an exciting opportunity.”
“I took the opportunity without hesitation and never looked back. It didn’t take me long to decide because I knew it was what I wanted, and I’ll never have any regrets. Once I set my mind on something, I go for it—there’s no holding me back.
“It was a mutual decision. The question was simple: there’s an opportunity—do you want to take it?
“I understand Financial Fair Play (FFP) can make things challenging for clubs, particularly when it comes to homegrown players, but that wasn’t my focus. My focus was on coming here, seeing the fans, the coach, and the potential to achieve great things.
“Saying goodbye on my last day wasn’t easy. I had to meet everyone, and it was emotional. I also spoke to Ten Hag, who shared his perspective. I told him, ‘This is my career. I need to push myself forward.’
“In this situation, I had to prioritize myself and follow my instincts for what I wanted in my career, without being held back by external factors.
“The departure was amicable. I love Manchester United deeply—it was my life for 22 years. But I’ve moved on now, and I’m thoroughly enjoying my time here.”
