Bayer Leverkusen head coach, Xabi Alonso, has said he ignored the chance to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, because he was focused on winning the league.
Alonso was one of the coaches linked to the role in March, after Klopp announced he was leaving Anfield.
But the former midfielder opted to remain with the Bundesliga champions for at least one more season.
“I saw the links to replace Klopp… but at that time I was focused on winning the league.
“We were only working on that, I didn’t negotiate with clubs,” Alonso said ahead of his return to Liverpool in the Champions League.
Liverpool eventually turned to Arne Slot and are top of the Premier League after 10 fixtures.
